Honduras lawyer proposes new prisons to manage rising crime arrests
Attorney Germán Licona has proposed expanding Honduras's prison infrastructure to address a potential surge in detainees linked to criminal organizations. Licona emphasized the need to complete the La Acequía penitentiary center while simultaneously moving forward with a new prison facility recently approved by the National Congress.
The proposal comes in response to concerns that current facilities may become insufficient as security operations against organized crime increase. Licona cited studies from civil security organizations estimating that between 40,000 and 60,000 individuals in Honduras are associated with criminal structures. He noted that judicial processes resulting in preventive detention measures are driving up the demand for prison space.
