Honduras legislator proposes ban on Halloween in schools

Dunia Jiménez, a deputy from the Libertad y Refundación (Libre) party, has submitted a bill to the Honduran National Congress to prohibit Halloween-related activities in all public and private educational institutions. The proposal seeks to prevent schools from organizing, promoting, or sponsoring parties, festivals, costume contests, or other recreational activities linked to the holiday.

If passed, the law would also restrict the use of school facilities, institutional resources, budgets, and official communication channels for such celebrations. Jiménez stated the initiative aims to reinforce ethical and moral values, family principles, and activities compatible with Honduran educational goals. She noted that several municipalities, including Comayagua and Copán, have already implemented similar restrictions.

The National Congress Education Commission is scheduled to debate the proposal next week. Arnold Burgos, president of the commission, indicated that the majority of members are likely to support the measure. While Burgos expressed personal disagreement with the adoption of Anglo-Saxon traditions in schools, he noted that private institutions should maintain autonomy provided activities do not involve aggression or satanic rituals.
