Honduras modernizes customs systems and faces human rights challenges

The Honduran Customs Administration has announced new technological developments to streamline foreign trade procedures and improve information exchange with Central American nations via the Digital Platform for Central American Trade. These updates aim to facilitate commercial operations and strengthen oversight, including a new system to monitor goods linked to forced labor.

In other domestic developments, Honduras continues to face scrutiny regarding human rights and legal compliance. The state has yet to fulfill four rulings from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights regarding the restitution of ancestral territories to Garifuna communities. Additionally, the U.S. Department of State maintains Honduras at Tier 2 in its trafficking in persons report, noting increased convictions but highlighting persistent deficiencies in victim protection and institutional response.

Legal and security matters also remain prominent, including an upcoming initial hearing for Libre party coordinator Melvin Cevallos regarding alleged electoral interference, and discussions regarding the legal auditing of assets seized from organized crime.
