Honduras negotiates TPS transition amid rising deportations

Honduras is facing significant migratory shifts following the definitive cancellation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in the United States. Between January 1 and August 20, 2026, a total of 30,965 Hondurans were deported from the United States, Mexico, and Guatemala. The vast majority, 27,828 individuals, were repatriated from the U.S. via air travel.

To manage this influx, the Honduran government is negotiating a transition period with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. A diplomatic delegation is scheduled to meet with U.S. officials in early September to advocate for individualized case reviews, aiming to protect those with deep social and economic ties to the U.S. Business leaders, including the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Cortés, have expressed relief regarding these negotiations, noting the importance of an orderly return process to prevent overwhelming national infrastructure.

Additionally, Honduras continues to participate in bilateral cooperation agreements, recently assisting in the safe return of 365 Mexican citizens deported from the United States.
