United States backs Honduras' terrorist designation of criminal gangs
The United States has expressed support for Honduras' decision to designate several criminal organizations as terrorist groups. Juan Pablo Segura, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, congratulated Honduran authorities for including the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), the 18th Street Gang, and the Devil's Cartel in this classification.
This designation follows recent reforms to the Honduran Penal Code, which expand the government's ability to classify criminal organizations as terrorist entities. The new legal framework includes the creation of specialized judicial circuits and allows for heightened security measures within penitentiaries, such as individual isolation in maximum-security cells and stricter controls on communications and visits.
U.S. officials stated that this move will strengthen the response to drug trafficking, combat criminal financing, and bolster joint efforts to protect regional borders. Meanwhile, in Honduras, authorities are working to improve aviation connectivity, including the reactivation of the Río Amarillo aerodrome to support tourism in the Copán region.
