Honduras records 108 women killed and 15 mass murders in 2026

Human‑rights groups reported that at least 108 women have been murdered in Honduras so far in 2026, with a historic impunity rate of about 95 percent. Coordinator Cristina Alvarado of the Visitación Padilla movement highlighted that the highest numbers of female killings are concentrated in the departments of Francisco Morazán, Cortés, Yoro, Atlántida and Olancho, and noted that 61 percent of the deaths occur inside the home. She said, “Sabemos que hay una investigación, sin embargo, no tenemos certeza de cuántos son los casos que han sido investigados hasta la fecha del 2026.”

The National Violence Observatory of UNAH recorded 15 separate scenes of multiple homicides this year, resulting in 72 victims, including eight women, after a recent school massacre in La Perla del Ulúa. Analyst Migdonia Ayestas warned that “La percepción de inseguridad aumenta y genera miedo colectivo,” and pointed to organized crime, poverty and weak state institutions as drivers of the violence. Honduras continues to average six homicides per day, and officials are urged to strengthen investigations and judicial proceedings.
