Argentina femicide crisis prompts call for national gender‑violence emergency

The MuMaLá observatory reported 127 femicides in Argentina between 1 January and 29 June 2026 – a violent death every 40 hours. The tally includes 94 direct femicides, 10 linked cases (eight male victims and two female), four trans­/travesticides, 12 feminicides linked to drug‑trafficking and organized crime, and seven suicides classified as feminicides.

In addition, 486 attempted femicides were recorded, roughly 3.8 attempts per completed killing, and 92 children lost their mothers. Provincial rates were highest in Santiago del Estero, Santa Fe, San Luis and Chubut. Seventy‑seven percent of the killings occurred in the victim’s home or shared residence, and six out of ten perpetrators were partners, ex‑partners or relatives. Only 9 % of victims had previously reported their aggressor, and most of those already had restraining orders that failed to prevent the murders.

MuMaLá spokesperson Victoria Aguirre demanded a National Emergency on Gender Violence, arguing that dedicated human and economic resources are needed to provide comprehensive protection and services for women and LGBTIQ+ people.
