Honduras reports debt reduction and export growth to China

Honduras reported significant economic shifts in the first half of 2026. The Central Bank of Honduras (BCH) recorded external debt of $1,257.1 million, representing 11.7% of the nation's total public external debt. This figure reflects a decrease of $63.8 million compared to December 2025, driven by $62.5 million in capital payments and favorable exchange rate adjustments. The BCH debt is primarily composed of loans (58.2%) and IMF allocations (39.9%).

Simultaneously, Honduran exports to China reached $38.3 million during the same six-month period, marking an increase over 2025. Key growth sectors include sugar, which exceeded $10 million in exports, and tobacco, which saw a fivefold increase compared to the previous year. Other notable exports included shrimp, coffee, and the first shipments of melons to the Chinese market.
