Honduras reports eight chikungunya cases

The Honduran Secretariat of Health (Sesal) has confirmed eight positive cases of chikungunya across four departments. The cases are distributed as follows: four in the Central District (Tegucigalpa), two in Atlántida, one in Olancho, and one in El Paraíso.

Health authorities have identified community transmission in the village of El Pedregalito, located in the municipality of Alauca, El Paraíso. This area is situated approximately five kilometers from the Nicaraguan border. The first case in the country was reported in September as an imported case from Nicaragua.

Homer Mejía, head of Epidemiological Surveillance, noted that while entire families have exhibited symptoms, there have been no reported hospitalizations or deaths related to the virus so far. The disease is transmitted by female Aedes mosquitoes, the same vector responsible for dengue. Key symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pain, and intense joint pain.
