Northern Triangle of Central America reports over 4,800 traffic deaths in 2026

Traffic accidents have claimed at least 4,809 lives across Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador during 2026, according to official reports from the three nations. Guatemala has recorded the highest number of fatalities, with 1,986 deaths reported between January and September. In Guatemala, motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable, accounting for approximately 64% of the total road deaths during that period.

Honduras follows with 1,634 fatalities recorded so far in 2026, a figure that already exceeds the total number of road deaths reported for the entire year of 2025. The National Directorate of Transit and Roadways (DNVT) has increased control operations and inspections to address the rising numbers.

In El Salvador, the National Road Safety Observatory reported 1,189 deaths from traffic accidents between January 1 and October 24, 2026. Recent incidents, such as a multi-vehicle collision on the Litoral highway involving two trucks and two motorcycles, have contributed to the ongoing safety concerns in the region.
