Honduras reports rising violence and significant migrant returns in 2026
Honduras is facing dual challenges of increasing violence and high numbers of returning citizens. According to Migración Honduras, 39,243 Hondurans were returned to the country between January 1 and October 22, 2026, primarily from the United States, Mexico, and Guatemala. Of these, 30,688 arrived via air and 8,555 via land. This figure represents over 91% of the total returns recorded in all of 2025.
On the security front, the country is experiencing high homicide rates. Data from the Police Statistical System (SEPOL) indicates 1,943 homicides were recorded between January and September 2026. The Distrito Central leads the nation with 229 violent deaths, followed by San Pedro Sula with 124. September saw a notable increase in violence, recording 241 homicides compared to 205 in the same month of 2025.
Experts from the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH) note that tightening U.S. migration restrictions are shifting Honduran migration patterns, with more individuals looking toward Mexico and Spain as alternative destinations.
