Honduras reports surge in elderly arrests and prison relocations

The Honduran Police Investigation Directorate (DPI) reported an 81.4% increase in the detention of elderly individuals during 2026. A total of 567 seniors were detained nationwide, up from 312 in 2025. Key offenses involving this demographic include sexual crimes, accounting for 69 detentions, and illegal possession of firearms, which resulted in 58 detentions.

Separately, the National Penitentiary Institute (INP) relocated 1,373 inmates to the Támara National Penitentiary Center (CPNT). The move, coordinated with the Armed Forces and the Military Public Order Police (PMOP), aimed to reduce overcrowding and enhance security. The relocated individuals were moved into a newly renovated module equipped with security cameras and a restricted electrical system to prevent unauthorized access to lighting controls. Inmates in the new module will remain under 24-hour surveillance.
