Honduras sees growing market for U.S. salvage vehicles

Honduras has become a significant market for used vehicles imported from the United States, particularly those with salvage titles. These vehicles are often declared total losses by insurance companies and subsequently purchased at auctions to be repaired and resold in the Honduran national market.

The business model is driven by the price gap between the acquisition cost in the U.S. and the relatively low cost of labor and repairs in Honduras. However, experts warn that reconstructed units may harbor hidden structural, electrical, or essential safety component damage that is not always visible to buyers.

According to data from Honduras Customs, 144,815 vehicles were imported into the country during 2026. While this figure represents total automotive imports rather than exclusively salvage units, auction platforms like Copart indicate that Honduras is a key destination for American salvage-titled vehicles.
