Honduras to implement controls on Chinese-owned businesses

Honduras is planning to implement new controls on Chinese-owned businesses to ensure they comply with national tax, labor, and commercial obligations. Eddy Ordóñez, the Secretary of Economic Development, warned that failing to act could lead to a “catastrophe” for the national economy, following protests from local merchants concerned about unfair competition from imported goods.

The government intends to work with municipalities to verify tax payments, product quality, and the respect of labor rights for Honduran workers. Officials clarified that the goal is not to block foreign investment or imports, but to ensure all companies operate within the law to prevent illegal competition against domestic producers.

While local merchants demand equitable conditions, some observers suggest a balanced approach is necessary. They argue that Chinese businesses provide affordable goods for low-income families and contribute to the economy through job creation, rent, and tax revenue when operating legally.
