Honduras to present electoral law reforms next week

Tomás Zambrano, president of the Honduran National Congress, announced that a proposal to reform the Electoral Law will be presented to the legislature next week. The proposal, developed by the Electoral Affairs Commission, aims to prevent disruptions similar to those experienced during the 2025 electoral process.

Key components of the reform include mandating the attendance of both primary and substitute counselors of the National Electoral Council (CNE) at all plenary sessions. Failure to attend could result in civil, administrative, and criminal liabilities, as well as grounds for immediate dismissal.

Additional measures include increasing civil society participation in the integration of Polling Stations (JRV) to promote citizen involvement. The reform also seeks to maintain gender parity during candidate substitutions, requiring that if a registered woman resigns, she must be replaced by a woman. Furthermore, the proposal aims to accelerate the transmission of election results to ensure they are available on the same day as the vote, citing models used in Chile and Colombia.
