Honduras to roll out smart license plates for one million vehicles

The Honduran government is launching a strategic project to modernize vehicle identification and strengthen national security through the implementation of smart license plates. The initiative, supported by the Instituto de la Propiedad (IP), aims to incorporate nearly one million vehicles—including approximately 500,000 motorcycles and 400,000 automobiles—that are currently circulating without registration.

The new plates will utilize Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. To support this rollout, mobile handheld readers are expected to arrive in October, followed by the installation of fixed readers at checkpoints in November. This infrastructure will allow the Dirección Nacional de Vialidad y Transporte (DNVT) to identify vehicles more efficiently on roads and at strategic locations.

Distribution of the new plates, which will be manufactured in Honduras, is scheduled to begin in November. Due to the high volume of pending units, the process is expected to be gradual, potentially extending through 2027.
