HondurasGate exposes US‑backed electoral interference across Latin America

Leaked audio recordings – dubbed HondurasGate – reveal a coordinated plan by right‑wing actors from the United States, Spain, Argentina and other countries to sway elections in Honduras and mount media attacks on left‑leaning governments in Mexico, Brazil and Colombia. The recordings feature former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández and current president Nasry Asfura discussing financing of a "digital journalism unit" in the United States to launch disinformation campaigns against leaders such as Gustavo Petro, Claudia Sheinbaum and former Honduran presidents Manuel Zelaya and Xiomara Castro. The plan includes diverting $300,000 from Honduras’s Ministry of Infrastructure and an additional $350,000 pledged by Argentine politician Javier Milei.

A related operation, Project Jupiter, centered in Colombia, employed artificial‑intelligence tools to fabricate false narratives and manipulate public opinion, funded by U.S. magnates and Colombian businessmen. Both initiatives are presented as part of a broader “Fourth‑Generation War” doctrine that seeks to erode sovereign decision‑making in Latin America through economic pressure, financial maneuvers and media‑cultural operations.
