Honestino film premieres in Brazil to recount student leader's history

The film ‘Honestino’, directed by Aurélio Michiles, is set to premiere in 18 Brazilian cities, including a special screening in Goiânia. The movie explores the life and disappearance of Honestino Guimarães, a former president of the National Union of Students (UNE) who was kidnapped by the military dictatorship in 1973.

Blending documentary elements with fiction, the film utilizes archival images, letters, poems, and testimonies from family members and colleagues to reconstruct Guimarães' trajectory. Bruno Gagliasso stars as the student leader, portraying him not just as a political symbol, but as a human being—a son, father, and friend—whose life was interrupted by state repression.

The production aims to prevent the history of the dictatorship from becoming a distant memory, addressing the mechanisms of historical erasure through a narrative that combines historical records with dramatized scenes.
