Honey benefits for cough and throat relief in winter

Honey is a traditional dietary staple during autumn and winter, often used to manage symptoms of common colds. While it is not proven to prevent the flu or colds, scientific evidence suggests it can be effective in relieving specific symptoms, particularly coughing.

A systematic review and meta-analysis published in BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine, which examined 14 studies on upper respiratory tract infections, found that honey was associated with a lower frequency and intensity of coughing compared to standard care. Additionally, its thick texture can provide temporary soothing for an irritated throat.

Research from Cochrane also indicates that honey may help relieve acute coughs in children, though it is not considered a cure for the underlying infection. Honey contains phenolic compounds and flavonoids that provide antioxidant properties, with darker varieties typically containing higher concentrations of these compounds.
