Honeybee queen development influenced by cell chemistry and diet
New research suggests that the development of a queen honeybee is influenced by more than just diet. While royal jelly—a nutrient-rich substance produced by worker bees—is a well-known factor in determining whether a female larva becomes a fertile queen or a sterile worker, a study published in Nature indicates that the physical and chemical properties of the growth chamber also play a critical role.
In a honeybee hive, most larvae develop in standard hexagonal cells. However, when a new queen is needed, workers construct larger, peanut-shaped cells. An international research team, including entomologist Boris Baer from the University of California, Riverside, found that the chemical makeup and walls of these specialized chambers appear to contribute to the larva's transition into a queen.
Royal jelly remains a central component of this process, serving as the primary nutritional driver for the queen's longevity and fertility. The substance is used by humans in various forms, including fresh, freeze-dried powder, and topical anti-aging products.
