Hong Joon-pyo criticizes golf special probe and judicial control

Former Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo has criticized the proposed special prosecution regarding President Lee Jae-myung’s golf activities during a recent commercial building collapse in Daegu. Hong described the push for a special probe as “petty and mean,” arguing that such political disputes reflect a low standard in South Korean politics. He further suggested that presidential golf activities should not be unnecessarily restricted, noting that certain locations like Taereung Golf Course are necessary for security purposes.

In a separate critique, Hong warned of a potential collapse of the separation of powers, claiming the administration is attempting to consolidate legislative, executive, and judicial control. He expressed concern over the restructuring of investigative agencies and the potential for judicial “taming” through the appointment of favorable Supreme Court justices.

Hong also directed sharp criticism toward the prosecution service, labeling prosecutors “cowardly” for failing to collectively protest the abolition of the Prosecution Service. Additionally, he criticized members of the People Power Party for engaging in “gossip-driven” debates and seeking media attention through provocative remarks rather than focusing on substantive policy issues during parliamentary audits.
