Hong Joon-pyo criticizes Park Geun-hye's political legacy
Hong Joon-pyo, the former mayor of Daegu, has issued a public critique of former President Park Geun-hye, suggesting her presidency was a result of the influence of her father, Park Chung-hee, rather than personal presidential qualities.
In a social media post, Hong stated that while he erected a monument to Park Chung-hee during his tenure as mayor, he never invited Park Geun-hye to the unveiling nor visited her private residence. He characterized her political downfall as the inevitable collapse of ‘image politics,’ arguing that those who rise through image alone fall when that image is destroyed.
These remarks follow recent political movements involving Park Geun-hye, including a visit by People Power Party Floor Leader Jung Jeong-sik to her residence. Hong expressed concern that such interactions increase internal conflicts within the conservative camp and urged the former president to retire from political conflict and enjoy a peaceful life.
