Hong Joon-pyo resumes legal career after leaving politics

Former Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo has announced his return to the legal profession following his departure from active politics. In a Facebook post on the 11th, Hong stated, “Today I start working as a lawyer again,” noting that he had been unemployed since leaving his political roles.

He clarified that he will not maintain a separate office, instead registering his residence as his official place of business. Hong expressed his intention to focus primarily on legal consulting rather than active litigation, stating he intends to avoid litigation activities as much as possible.

This move follows a previous indication in August, where he mentioned the need to re-register as a lawyer to “prevent police tyranny,” even if he did not engage in active defense work. His return to law mirrors previous transitions of legal-background politicians, such as former lawmakers Lee In-je and Choi Jae-cheon, who returned to legal practice after their political careers.
