Hong Kong activist Wu Chi-wai faces possible UK deportation after brief reunion

Former Hong Kong opposition leader Wu Chi‑wai, who was sentenced in 2024 to four years and five months for conspiracy to commit subversion under the 2020 national security law, travelled to London after his release to reunite with his wife and son. British border officials granted him a seven‑day immigration bail, but authorities indicated he could be removed as early as next week, cutting short the family visit.

Wu expressed concern that his criminal record may hinder future travel and appealed to the Home Office to extend his stay. The UK government reiterated its support for Hong Kong residents, noting that more than 230,000 Hong Kongers hold special visas and about 9,800 have settled in the United Kingdom. Wu denied seeking asylum, saying his aim is to reunite with his family.
