Hong Kong activists sentenced for inciting subversion in Tiananmen vigil case

Three former leaders of the now-disbanded Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China have been sentenced by a Hong Kong court for inciting subversion under the national security law.

Lee Cheuk-yan, the former chair, received a 7-year prison sentence. Chow Hang-tung was sentenced to 7 years and 3 months, while Albert Ho was sentenced to 5 years and 2 months. The court also imposed a fine of 1.5 million Hong Kong dollars on the Alliance itself. The convictions stem from activities between July 2020 and September 2021 related to organizing annual vigils commemorating the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown.

Hong Kong's Security Bureau stated that the Alliance's mission was to undermine the leadership of the Communist Party and sow hatred against the central government. Conversely, critics and rights groups view the sentences as a sign of the ongoing erosion of civil liberties and freedom of expression in Hong Kong.
