Hong Kong adds “Dim Sum” to Pacific typhoon naming list

The Hong Kong Observatory has secured the inclusion of the name “Dim Sum” on the Asia‑Pacific region’s official list of tropical cyclone names. The name was selected through a public poll that attracted more than 20,000 votes and will appear on the 2026 roster of storms that develop in the western North Pacific and the South China Sea.

The name is part of a nine‑name addition approved by the UN‑backed Typhoon Committee, which is jointly run by the United Nations and the World Meteorological Organization. The committee maintains a rotating list of 140 names contributed by its 14 member countries, each providing ten culturally relevant terms such as animals, plants, historical figures and food. New names replace those retired after causing severe casualties or economic loss, with the aim of improving public awareness and recognition of upcoming storms.
