Hong Kong advances digital finance via tokenization and private swaps

Hong Kong is advancing its digital finance ecosystem through new infrastructure and pilot programs. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) plans to pilot the tokenization of Exchange Fund Bills by the end of 2026. This operational testing aims to allow banks to use over HK$1.3 trillion worth of these short-term debt instruments on a distributed ledger, providing continuous, 24/7 access for liquidity and asset management.

In conjunction with these efforts, the HKMA plans to launch CMU OmniClear in 2026, a digital asset platform designed to regularize digital bond issuance. This follows a period where Hong Kong captured nearly 50% of global digital bond issuance between 2025 and the first half of 2026.

Separately, the Hong Kong-based crypto SuperApp Sumex has integrated SilentSwap to expand its private cross-chain swap capabilities. This integration provides users with non-custodial, privacy-focused infrastructure to move assets between networks while reducing direct on-chain visibility between source and destination wallets.
