Hong Kong advances high-tech goals via Five-Year Plan and biomanufacturing initiative

Hong Kong is advancing its first Five-Year Plan by focusing on the development of a high-tech innovation ecosystem, centered around the Northern Metropolis project. The strategic blueprint aims to transform the region from a financial hub into an innovation node through the establishment of three major university cities: San Tin, Fanling/Sheung Shui, and Tai Po/Tap Mun, focusing on sectors such as medicine, life sciences, AI, robotics, and advanced manufacturing.

To support these goals, the ‘Hong Kong Green Biomanufacturing Industry Development Common Initiative’ was recently launched at the Lok Ma Chau Loop Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone. This initiative seeks to establish industry standards for green biomanufacturing and foster synergy between research and industry.

A key outcome of the recent industry summit was the launch of the ‘Open Yeast Platform Hong Kong Center,’ a collaborative project involving Pinnacle Food, BioBoost, and the Open Science Network Society. This center is designed to provide standardized infrastructure and an open-source yeast library to lower technical barriers for startups in the Greater Bay Area.
