Hong Kong and Singapore compete for Asian gold trading leadership
Hong Kong and Singapore are introducing competing plans to establish themselves as premier gold trading hubs in Asia. Both financial centers aim to attract new capital and business by leveraging strong demand for the precious metal and connecting with existing global markets.
Hong Kong has already begun pilot operations for a gold transaction settlement system and a new price index. Officials indicated that the city will soon reveal details regarding offshore gold futures denominated in Chinese yuan, allowing banks to settle physical gold transactions in real-time using multiple currencies.
Singapore is focusing on linking various liquidity pools, including over-the-counter trading in London, futures markets in New York, and Asian producers. The city-state is also working to expand its storage capacity to serve as a custodian for gold held by foreign central banks.
Both regions are positioning themselves to benefit from a global trend of central banks diversifying their reserves, a movement that challenges the historical dominance of traditional hubs like London and New York.
