Hong Kong authorities consider banning Joshua Wong documentary

The Hong Kong Security Bureau is considering legal measures to ban the Netflix documentary ‘Joshua: Teenager vs. Superpower’, which has recently risen to the top of the platform's regional charts.

The move follows criticism from the state-backed newspaper Wen Wei Po, which accused the film of distorting facts to glorify activist Joshua Wong and featuring content that incites subversion. The documentary, directed by Joe Piscatella, chronicles Wong’s political rise, including his leadership during the 2014 Umbrella Movement.

A spokesperson for the Security Bureau stated that all broadcasted works must comply with local laws, specifically emphasizing the city’s national security regulations. The bureau noted it is “taking relevant follow-up actions” and warned that law enforcement will intervene if illegal acts are identified. Joshua Wong, who has been imprisoned for six years following convictions for subversion, recently pleaded guilty to conspiracy to collude with foreign forces.
