Hong Kong Bar Association President discusses AI at UIA annual conference

Hong Kong Bar Association President Timothy Tong attended the 70th International Association of Lawyers (UIA) annual conference in Marrakech. During a roundtable discussion titled “Artificial Intelligence, Rule of Law and the Legal Profession,” Tong shared perspectives on how technological changes affect legal practice in Hong Kong.

Tong emphasized that while artificial intelligence can improve efficiency, foster innovation, and increase access to legal services, it cannot replace the professional judgment and responsibility of lawyers. He noted that as technology increasingly influences legal and judicial decision-making, maintaining transparency, accountability, and public confidence is essential. The discussions also highlighted the need to cultivate a new generation of legal talent capable of combining technological literacy with integrity and sound judgment.

Additionally, the Hong Kong Bar Association and the UIA will co-host the Asia-Pacific Regional Conference in Hong Kong in January 2027. The conference, themed “Mediation and Arbitration in International Commercial Disputes: Strategic Tools for Addressing Cross-Border Investment and Trade Disputes,” will coincide with the 120th anniversary of the Hong Kong Bar Association.
