Hong Kong completes first demonstration flight of passenger-grade eVTOL

An electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, the EHang EH216-S, has successfully completed its first demonstration flight in Hong Kong. The flight, which carried a robot passenger along a preset route, was a collaborative effort between EHang, Kwoon Chung Bus Group, and Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks.

Since mid-August, the aircraft has completed over ten test flights totaling more than 10 hours of operation without reported incidents. The testing process is expected to progress from empty flights to cargo transport before eventually moving to passenger services. The EH216-S features a maximum speed of 130 km/h and a range of approximately 30 km.

To support the development of the low-altitude economy, the Hong Kong government is working on new civil aviation legislation specifically for unmanned aircraft weighing over 150 kg. Officials aim to have this legislation ready for legislative review by 2027 to establish a safety foundation for commercial operations.
