Hong Kong consumers express low trust in banks regarding deepfake scams

A survey by financial technology company FIS reveals that only 23% of Hong Kong consumers are confident their banks can prevent deepfake scams before funds are lost. This figure is the lowest among the four markets surveyed in the 2026 FIS Consumer Pulse Survey.

The report indicates that 41% of respondents have either been targeted by or know someone targeted by AI impersonation fraud. Furthermore, only 19% of consumers feel confident that banks would refund money stolen through such methods.

While concerns regarding security are high, there is significant engagement with the technology. Approximately 62% of respondents used generative AI for financial matters in the last year, and 74% are familiar with AI-powered banking services. Consumers showed more comfort with AI for routine tasks, such as tracking spending or paying recurring bills, rather than high-stakes actions like applying for loans or credit cards.
