Hong Kong court rulings on violent assaults and unlawful assembly
Several legal proceedings concluded in Hong Kong courts involving violent crimes and social unrest.
A 19-year-old man was sentenced to eight years in prison for an attack in Wan Chai where he splashed a 36-year-old Singaporean woman with 69% concentration sulfuric acid. The defendant, who reportedly took the job for a 10,000 HKD fee, caused the victim to suffer second-degree burns and permanent scarring.
In a separate case, a 29-year-old man was found guilty of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm after he pushed a billiards player into the path of a moving bus in San Po Kong. The court has adjourned sentencing pending a psychiatric report.
A 53-year-old man was sentenced to six months in prison for his involvement in an unlawful assembly and wearing a mask during the 2019 protests in Mong Kok. Although previously acquitted, the case was retried following a successful appeal by the Department of Justice.
Additionally, a 63-year-old man facing indecent assault charges involving a 13-year-old relative has been remanded in custody, with sentencing deferred to November pending psychological and background reports.
