Hong Kong customs seize $17 million worth of counterfeit World Cup merchandise
Hong Kong's customs agency confiscated more than 230,000 counterfeit items ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup, valuing the haul at HK$156 million (about €17.2 million). The seized goods, uncovered in 34 separate cases between 26 May and 10 June, included thousands of fake jerseys, football shoes and goalkeeper gloves.
Six suspects were briefly detained during the operation and later released on bail. Customs officials said roughly 80 % of the fakes were intended for export to the Americas—specifically the United States, Canada and Mexico, where the tournament will be held. The agency warned that demand for fan merchandise will drive further smuggling and urged shoppers to buy only from reputable retailers. Violations can carry a maximum fine of HK$500,000 and up to five years imprisonment.
