Hong Kong expands trade outreach to Malaysia and Central Asia
The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) staged a full‑day Think Business, Think Hong Kong symposium on 11 August at the Shangri‑La in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysian business leaders, investors and professional‑service providers met with Hong Kong counterparts to discuss cross‑border investment, market entry and partnership opportunities, aligning with Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan 2030 to boost innovation and global connectivity.
Analysts also highlight Hong Kong’s growing interest in Xinjiang as a logistical bridge to Central Asia. Xinjiang’s railway hubs at Alashankou and Khorgos link to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, enabling freight routes between China and Europe. Hong Kong officials, led by Chief Executive John Lee, have visited these markets to explore trade possibilities, while observers warn of sanctions‑related risks tied to human‑rights concerns in the region.
Together, these initiatives aim to position Hong Kong as a super‑connector for Southeast Asian and Central Asian firms seeking to expand into broader Asian and global value chains.
