Hong Kong records highest temperature since 1884

Hong Kong has recorded its highest temperature since meteorological records began in 1884. At 15:15 local time, the Hong Kong Observatory in Tsim Sha Tsui measured 36.9°C, breaking the previous record of 36.6°C set on August 22, 2017.

The extreme heat is attributed to the peripheral air mass of Severe Typhoon Dolphin as it approaches the Zhejiang coast. Other districts experienced even higher temperatures, with Sheung Shui reaching 39.7°C and Happy Valley hitting 38°C.

Authorities have issued heatwave warnings, advising residents to avoid strenuous outdoor activities and stay hydrated. Former Observatory Director Lam Chiu-ying commented on the extreme conditions, noting that while he tries to conserve energy by not using air conditioning, the rising temperatures due to climate change and El Niño present significant challenges.
