Hong Kong football team wins 4-0 against Laos in ASEAN Cup opener

The FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 officially commenced at the Kai Tak Stadium, where the Hong Kong representative team secured a 4-0 victory against Laos in their opening match. The event drew nearly 19,000 spectators, creating a vibrant atmosphere described by Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Louisa Yung, as a ‘red sea’ of support.

In Group B action, Cambodia secured a narrow 1-0 win over Myanmar following a stoppage-time goal by Kakada. While both teams now hold 3 points, Cambodia leads the group due to head-to-head results. Myanmar head coach Andersen noted that his team has a low probability of advancing, estimated at only 10% to 20%, and cautioned Hong Kong that should they meet Cambodia in the final, it would be a highly challenging match due to Cambodia’s physical strength and naturalized players.

Cambodian coach Koji Gyotoku expressed a desire to face Hong Kong in the final, acknowledging the high level of play displayed by the Hong Kong squad.
