Hong Kong franchised bus companies apply for significant fare increases

Major franchised bus operators in Hong Kong have submitted applications to increase fares, citing rising operational costs driven by a sharp surge in fuel prices. KMB has requested a 16% increase, Citybus (Urban and New Territories) 17.7%, Long Win 8.1%, and Ngong Ping Transit 9.8%.

According to Legislative Council documents, fuel procurement costs in March 2026 rose between 75% and 134% compared to January of the same year, influenced by Middle East conflicts. While these companies recorded after-tax profits in 2025, they project significant earnings declines for the first half of 2026, with some estimates suggesting drops exceeding 50%.

The Secretary for Transport and Logistics, Chan Mei-bo, stated that the government will review the applications by balancing the financial sustainability of operators with the public's ability to afford commuting. Discussions regarding these increases are expected to take place during a Transport Affairs Committee meeting this Friday.
