Hong Kong iPhone pre-orders hit by 25 million HKD credit card fraud

A large-scale credit card fraud incident occurred in Hong Kong during the pre-order period for new Apple iPhones, affecting over 1,200 citizens and involving approximately 25 million HKD. The unauthorized transactions were reportedly facilitated by a simplified ordering process that lacked strict two-factor authentication (2FA) or multi-step verification, such as passwords or app-based confirmations.

Analysts suggest the incident highlights structural vulnerabilities in Hong Kong’s digital payment infrastructure. While some banks may have relaxed security protocols like 3D Secure or OTP to maintain high transaction conversion rates during peak traffic, the event has raised concerns regarding the balance between consumer convenience and cybersecurity.

Proposed solutions to prevent future occurrences include adopting stricter regulatory frameworks similar to the EU’s Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) and transitioning from traditional pull-based credit card systems to push-based digital currency models, such as e-HKD or regulated stablecoins, which utilize cryptographic signatures to eliminate the risks associated with static card data.
