Hong Kong Jockey Club faces declining betting turnover

The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) is experiencing a significant downturn in local betting turnover at the start of the 2026/27 racing season. Out of the first six racing days, five have recorded year-on-year declines. Most recently, turnover at Sha Tin fell by 11.5% to approximately HK$1.359 billion.

CEO Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges has described the trend as a “major warning sign.” While the number of customers remains similar to last year, the average amount wagered per customer has decreased. Potential causes identified include a smaller number of horses per race due to weather concerns, the diversion of funds toward overseas commingling pools, and increased competition from football betting, which now accounts for over half of total betting turnover.

In an unusual move to retain customers, the HKJC has reportedly implemented micro-marketing tactics, such as offering cash vouchers and convenience store coupons to bettors who wager on a minimum number of races. Additionally, some bettors have expressed dissatisfaction regarding perceived discrepancies between advertised odds and actual payouts, leading to concerns over transparency and trust.
