Hong Kong JUPAS admission rate drops to 34% as HKU and CUHK split all top scorers

The Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) released its results for this year, showing 45,545 applicants – an increase of about 5.3% from the previous year. Approximately 15,355 students were admitted to bachelor‑degree programmes at the eight major universities and the City University, giving an overall admission rate of about 34%, the lowest in recent years. A further 4,979 candidates were admitted under the Specified Subject/Degree Scheme (SSSDP).

Among the 24 top‑scoring candidates in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) exam, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) each admitted 12 students. HKU took five "super top‑scorers" and four regular top‑scorers into its distinguished medical programmes, while CUHK enrolled four "super top‑scorers" and eight top‑scorers, also into its medical streams. The remaining universities reported strong admission figures, with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology admitting 1,283 students, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University about 1,650, and City University around 1,600, most of whom achieved Band A results and received scholarships.
