Hong Kong launches National Ecology Day initiatives and marine conservation pact

The Hong Kong SAR Government held the 4th National Ecology Day launch ceremony and seminar to promote ecological civilization and environmental conservation. To encourage public participation, the government has partnered with over 30 non-governmental organizations to offer various incentives, including free admission to the Hong Kong Wetland Park and double reward points for recycling through the ‘Green@Community’ network.

During the event, the Hong Kong government signed a memorandum of understanding with the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department and the Shenzhen Marine Development Bureau regarding coral and marine ecology public education. This cooperation aims to strengthen regional efforts and enhance the international status of coral conservation.

Deputy Chief Secretary Cheuk Wing-sing stated that the government is formulating its first five-year plan to align with the national ‘15th Five-Year Plan,’ focusing on carbon reduction, pollution control, and green transformation. The government aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and intends to increase the proportion of zero-carbon energy in its power generation mix to approximately 60-70% by 2035. Other initiatives include hydrogen energy strategies, electric vehicle roadmaps, and the use of artificial intelligence to optimize environmental impact assessments.
