Hong Kong lyricist Peter Lai dies at 76

Renowned Hong Kong lyricist and actor Peter Lai (黎彼得) passed away on 5 August 2026 at the age of 76. A pivotal figure in Cantonese pop music, Lai wrote the lyrics for hits such as “Monica,” which helped launch the career of Leslie Cheung, and collaborated with stars including Alan Tam, Leslie Cheung, and other icons of the 1970s‑80s era. He also appeared in TVB dramas, most famously as “Uncle Leopard” in the long‑running sitcom “Love at Home – Happy Delivery.”

Lai’s health had deteriorated in his final months. He suffered a stroke in March 2026, was hospitalized and later moved to a nursing home, where he remained bedridden. Earlier health issues included heart artery surgery, a severe flu that led to lung infection, and kidney disease. His longtime friend and fellow actor Cheng Chi‑kuang confirmed the death and recalled visiting Lai on his birthday in May, when Lai showed no response. Lai’s death marks the loss of a cultural “ghost‑writer” whose over 300 songs left a lasting imprint on Hong Kong’s music scene.
