Hong Kong man arrested in 30-case cheque fraud scheme

Police in Hong Kong arrested a 38‑year‑old man, identified only by the surname Wong, after linking him to a mail‑theft operation that targeted cheques in Kowloon and the New Territories. Using self‑made tools, he is alleged to have intercepted letters containing cheques, altered the payee details and deposited the forged instruments into multiple mule accounts.

Investigators say the scheme affected about 30 victims and resulted in losses of roughly HK$770,000. The suspect was detained in a hotel room in Kwai Tsing on 17 July, and authorities seized the tools used to steal mail and a batch of altered cheques. He has been charged with theft and conspiracy to defraud and is scheduled to appear before the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Court on 20 July.
