Hong Kong nightlife sees decline amid changing consumption habits
Social media observations on Xiaohongshu have highlighted a noticeable decline in Hong Kong’s nightlife and evening street activity. Users have described the atmosphere on the MTR Island Line after 8:00 PM as unusually quiet, contrasting sharply with the city’s former reputation as a ‘city that never sleeps.’
The restaurant sector is also experiencing shifts, with many establishments closing as early as 9:00 PM and often managing only a single round of business per evening. Local restaurateurs report that business can be even slower on weekends, as many residents choose to travel outside of Hong Kong during their time off.
Several factors are cited for this change in consumption patterns. The long-term habits formed during the pandemic, such as a preference for online entertainment and staying at home, appear to have persisted. Additionally, economic pressures have led many workers to return home immediately after work to save money. The rise of the Greater Bay Area has also contributed to the trend, with increased weekend travel to the region resulting in higher passenger volumes on the East Rail Line compared to other lines.
