Hong Kong police arrest Boom News founder Tang Ho-wing
Hong Kong national security police have arrested Tang Ho-wing, the 37-year-old founder of the online news outlet Boom News, and activist Lee Ying-chi. The arrests were conducted on suspicion of committing seditious acts under the city’s 2024 Safeguarding National Security Ordinance.
Authorities allege the individuals were involved in inciting public disorder by spreading disinformation. The investigation stems from an August 31 gathering near the Prince Edward MTR station, which commemorated the seventh anniversary of the 2019 clashes between protesters and police. Police stated that the arrests were linked to the dissemination of false information intended to incite hatred against the government and police.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has called for Tang’s immediate release, stating that “reporting is not sedition” and accusing the government of intolerance toward factual reporting. This arrest marks the fourth sedition case involving a journalist in recent months, highlighting increasing pressure on independent media in Hong Kong.
