Hong Kong police bust large elder phone‑scam, Xinjiang police seize hotel memory‑theft duo

Hong Kong’s Kowloon City police precinct investigated a series of phone‑scam incidents in which fraudsters impersonated relatives to claim urgent bail‑money needs. Over June‑July, ten cases were solved, leading to the arrest of six men and one woman aged 15 to 45, including both local residents and foreign passport holders. Victims were elderly people aged 61‑89 who lost a total of about HK$700,000, with HK$290,000 recovered on‑site. Police warned young people seeking summer jobs to stay vigilant against offers to collect unknown cash.

In Xinjiang’s Bayi First Division, public security officers uncovered a hotel‑theft ring that targeted computer memory modules. Between 15 and 31 May, two men, Li and Cheng, rented hotel rooms, removed sixteen RAM sticks, and sold them online and offline, earning roughly CNY 132,000 before being caught when the hotels reported malfunctioning computers. Both suspects have been placed under criminal detention while investigations continue.
