Hong Kong police officer Chu Chun-kwok dies after 21 years of paralysis

Hong Kong police officer Chu Chun-kwok has passed away at the age of 52 due to organ failure, following a 21-year struggle with paralysis.

In July 2005, while on patrol in Cheung Sha Wan, Chu was attacked by a suspect with a knife. Despite suffering a severe neck wound that damaged his artery, he attempted to pursue the assailant for approximately 50 meters before collapsing from blood loss. While he survived the initial attack, the resulting lack of oxygen to his brain left him paralyzed and unable to speak or care for himself.

Chu was awarded the Gold Medal for Bravery in 2006 for his actions during the incident. His family, including his daughter who returned from Australia to be by his side, remained dedicated to his care throughout his two-decade recovery. His wife noted that the police force has provided ongoing support to the family during this time.
