Hong Kong police officer seeks damages for 2020 stabbing

A Hong Kong police officer, Lui Chun-kit, is seeking at least HK$220,000 in damages from a man who stabbed him during a protest in Causeway Bay on July 1, 2020. The officer testified at the District Court that he sustained multiple muscle tears and required surgery after being knifed in the shoulder and left elbow while performing crowd control duties.

The defendant, Wong Kwan-wa, was previously jailed for five years after pleading guilty to rioting and wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm. Wong did not appear in court for the damages hearing.

Lui testified that the attack caused him significant physical and emotional distress, including flashbacks to the location of the incident. He noted that while he has physically recovered, the injury prevented him from returning to operational frontline work as originally planned. Instead, he was reassigned to a public relations role, which he described as a “letdown” compared to his preferred operational duties.
